| Janet Hislop - Head
of Banking, Cayman. June 2006
From Molecular Biologist to a top Banker – short description
of Janet’s career moves. She was educated in the Cayman
Islands, Canada and the UK gaining a degree in molecular biology
and genetics. She started her career at the Cayman Islands Health
Services as a Genetic Counsellor and Medical Social Worker before
she moved into her new role in training and development in the
civil service and the private sector. After some years she moved
into the finance industry.
Janet explains: “People very often say that it is difficult
to see the connection between my career moves. I personally think
that communicating, managing and working with people has been
the common thread throughout my professional life.” Strong
skills in all of those areas have allowed her to move quickly
through the ranks in the finance industry.
Janet joined Deutsche Bank in June 2000 as Head of Banking for
Deutsche Bank (Cayman) Limited. Prior to joining Deutsche Bank,
Janet was employed by Barclays Bank PLC as a Corporate Manager
in the Offshore Department.
In 2005, Janet was appointed as a Director of Deutsche Bank (Cayman)
Limited and in 2006 promoted to Vice-President, Banking for the
Cayman Islands and region. She manages a team of 8 people with
responsibility for the promotion of Private Wealth Management
services to the Bank’s intermediary and institutional client
base. Janet is also in charge of development of the private client
proposition, both on and off island.
Keeping a work life balance is important and Janet, a Caymanian
who is married with two teenage children, has a keen interest
in ecology, is a demon dominos player and a dedicated sports fan.
“When the opportunities arise I always follow the fortunes
of the Windies team around the Caribbean region,” says Janet.
Matt Hemans, Fiduciary Services Division, Guernsey. December
2005
Purchasing shares, buying property, taking out a loan or having
art work valued – it’s all in a day’s work for
Matt Hemans. Matt is an assistant manager at Deutsche Bank and
his clients are high net worth individuals; he has day to day
dealings with his clients in addition to lawyers, bankers and
other intermediaries He is responsible for managing a team and
he also gets to travel as part of his job. “My client base
is mainly Latin American and I have made several trips to the
Americas,” he says.
After leaving Elizabeth College, Matt (29) went to the University
of Teesside where he graduated with a degree in business economics.
He returned to Guernsey. “I’ve always had an interest
in business and finance, so to end up in the finance industry
seems to make sense!” After five years he took time out
to travel and then returned and joined Deutsche Bank as a senior
trust officer. He is impressed with the encouragement given to
professional qualifications. “There is a strong study culture;
staff are encouraged to attend talks by professional bodies such
as STEP and ICSA and pursue a relevant qualification for their
area of the business.”
Matt has himself completed the professional level of ICSA supported
by the bank with study leave and course provision. So, what advice
does he have?
“I would recommend that you don’t rush into things
too quickly, I think it’s best to look around until you
feel comfortable enough to commit to a place. Also, don’t
be afraid to ask questions if you know people in an industry that
interests you.”
