Deutsche Bank (Mauritius) Limited became the lead sponsor of
Mauritius' annual cycle race, The Deutsche Bank Mauritius 100km
Cycle Tour, in 2004 and in 2005 doubled its financial commitment
to the Tour to MUR 500,000.
The event, which was the brainchild of local businessman and cycling
enthusiast, Barry Haarhof is based on the successful cycle tour
held in South Africa each year and was first established in Mauritius
in 1999.
In addition to some 650 local entrants, last year’s event
attracted 167 overseas cyclists, mainly from South Africa. Whilst
some of these are professional and dedicated cyclists, there are
many enthusiasts who choose to combine the opportunity to enjoy
their sport and also take some time out to relax and enjoy the
delights of Mauritius.
The Tour is organised by The Circle, a group of Mauritian-based
businessmen who meet once a month principally to share fellowship
and exchange views, but also to arrange events that are fun to
attend and at the same time raise money for needy causes. The
Circle tries to provide assistance in a non-partisan way, and
where possible, with physical rather than financial support.
Over the years the event has grown to encompass the local community
with many charitable as well as commercial organisations being
represented either through their participation at the Mont Choisy
finish, at the pre-race Expo at Le Caudan Waterfront or organising
the refreshment stations for the cyclists en-route. Indeed, there
is now a category for corporate teams and firms that have been
involved in an organisational capacity in the past are this year
taking the opportunity to cycle in the Tour.
